Rain caps — also known as exhaust weather caps or stack caps — are fitted to the top of vertical exhaust stacks and outlet pipes to prevent rainwater, debris and insects from entering the exhaust system when the engine is not running. They open automatically under exhaust gas pressure when the engine starts and close by gravity when it stops.
